Bushiribana Ruins

Visitors are often surprised to learn that Aruba once experienced a genuine gold rush. The island still has remnants of gold smelters, with the Bushiribana ruins being the most impressive and accessible. Gold was discovered in 1824, leading to a rush that continued until 1916.

During that time, gold mining was a significant economic driver for the island, yielding over 3 million pounds of gold from its arid soil. For more intriguing facts and exhibits about the island's economic history, be sure to visit the Museum of Industry Aruba in San Nicolas.

The Bushiribana ruins sit right by the sea, rising like a mirage from the surrounding barren landscape, and are just a 20-minute drive east of downtown or Palm Beach.
